Cheong park pavilion redevelopment

The next generation of homegrown footy and cricket stars in Croydon can look forward to getting ready for the big games in a refurbished and extended sports pavilion at Cheong Park, thanks to the Victorian Government.

Member for North-Eastern Metropolitan Sonja Terpstra today joined Maroondah City Council Mayor, Cr Rob Steane, Councillors and members of local South Croydon Football and Cricket Clubs to officially open the building, made possible by a $325,000 investment from the Government’s Female Friendly Facilities Fund.

The refurbished female friendly pavilion includes two new female friendly and accessible change rooms, an umpire changeroom, refurbished social space, kitchen, and first aid room making it the perfect base for local sports to run training and competition.

The refurbished building will provide a modern home for the various sporting teams, especially the growing ranks of women and girls signing up for local cricket and football.

Local groups such as 900-member strong Croydon U3A can now also conduct their 100 wellbeing activities and classes for elderly residents at the pavilion.

The government’s investment in the pavilion is part of more than $1.6 billion kicked into community sport and active recreation infrastructure since 2014.

It’s backed by the recent release of the Government’s Fair Access Policy Roadmap aimed at ensuring women and girls get equal access to community sport facilities across the state.

From playspace redevelopments to pavilion upgrades, investments like these provide high-quality and accessible places for Victorians to reap the benefits of sport and active recreation participation.

They are all about creating jobs, stimulating local economies, and improving the health, wellbeing, and social outcomes for Victorian communities.

Sonja Terpstra MP acknowledged the Maroondah City Council for its $975,000 financial contribution and the Federal Government for its $500,000 contribution.
