Dorset Road Extension and Napoleon Road Upgrade

An update from Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) on the Dorset Road extension project:

Current Activities

Over the coming months, MRPV will be carrying out various land, environmental and technical assessments to get a better understanding of the area. These investigations will help shape the initial designs of the road and ensure we minimise impacts where possible. You can expect to see our work crews surveying the area on public land and private properties. You will receive a separate letter if access to your property is required. We will endeavour to minimise disruption to local traffic.

Have your say

Do you use the roads around Ferntree Gully, Lysterfield and Rowville? We want to hear from you about how you travel and your views about the road network.

Please visit engage.vic.gov.au/dorset-road-extension-napoleon-road-upgrade to complete the survey.

The survey will be open until 16 December 2020. Survey results will be considered in our planning and development work for these projects.

Health and safety

We are doing our part to help reduce the risk of infection and slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Victorian community. The health and safety of our workers and the community is our key priority as we develop the Dorset Road Extension and Napoleon Road Upgrade projects, as is supporting physical distancing measures in line with current health advice.

We have strict protocols in place to protect the safety of our construction workforce, including enhanced industrial cleaning arrangements, provision of personal protective equipment and measures to reduce staff contact, including staggered shifts. For more information and advice about the outbreak of Coronavirus, please visit coronavirus.vic.gov.au.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Dorset Road Extension?

The Dorset Road Extension Project involves a 3km extension of Dorset Road from Burwood Highway in Ferntree Gully down the existing road reserve to Napoleon Road and then onto Lysterfield Road in Lysterfield.

What are the benefits of Dorset Road Extension?

Dorset Road Extension aims to improve north-south connectivity and traffic flow for road users and will aim to improve connectivity by reducing journey times between major residential areas and employment precincts within Knox such as Rowville, Boronia, Bayswater and Knoxfield/Scoresby.

Why is this project needed?

Dorset Road is a primary arterial that provides continuous north-south connectivity between Maroondah Highway in Croydon, and Burwood Highway in Ferntree Gully. In recent years, the population of Knox has grown with most of the growth occurring in Boronia, Ferntree Gully and Rowville.

As a result, this growth in population, coupled with the growth in employment in the local and surrounding areas, has increased the traffic demand on the road network. The high volumes of traffic results in traffic congestion across the network and commuters are experiencing delays when accessing employment, education and recreation facilities in the area.

What is the status of the Dorset Road Extension project?

Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) is the Victorian Government body undertaking planning and development work to inform the Dorset Road Extension Business Case. This includes traffic modelling, planning studies and environmental investigations.

This development work will allow us to understand the environmental and social impacts of the project, develop design options and confirm the project’s scope and costs. Project timelines and milestones will be determined through this detailed planning work. We will provide the community with updates and information as planning progresses.

How will the community be kept up to date and have their say?

In late 2020, MRPV held a Community Traffic Survey and had over 2000 landowners, businesses and commuters complete the survey to tell us about the local roads around Ferntree Gully, Lysterfield and Rowville.

The results of the survey are currently being considered by the Project Team undertaking the planning and development for these projects. The themes of feedback received can be found on bigbuild.engage.vic.gov.au/dorset-road-extension-napoleon-road-upgrade
