Mental Health course visit at Swinburne TAFE

It was a pleasure to get to visit one of the Cert IV in Mental Health classes being run out of Swinburne Tafe Croydon today.

Like so many aspects of life, the COVID-19 pandemic shone a new light on mental health issues in our society. The recent Royal Commission into mental health also made many important and timely recommendations , across a wide range of sectors.

Among these was a call to action for the skills and training sector to build our capacity to train more mental health practitioners and support workers. and to help to ensure awareness of mental health issues is more embedded in our society.

This is why courses like this are so important – they give students the knowledge, skills and values required to work as a professional in community mental health.
It’s also a great pleasure to see that this important course has been added to the Free TAFE course list, removing the financial barriers that might otherwise keep dedicated and talented people from realising their study or training goals.

Thank you to the students and staff for letting me see part of the class, and a practical role play simulation of a real life counselling event.
