Great meeting this afternoon with the YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament discussing their Civics Education Bill.
Many young people in the Eastern Metropolitan Region feel that they do not possess the necessary information that allows them to properly participate in our democratic processes. And so via the Youth Parliament, they have drafted a Bill for the inclusion of Civics Education in our curriculum. Here’s why….
Some of the questions young people don’t have information about include, but is not limited to:
Why do I need to enrol to vote?
How do I enrol to vote?
How do I cast my ballot?
Why do I need to number every box?
How do I find out information about candidates?
These questions are NOT about politics. It’s about PARTICIPATION and having access to information that allows young people to make informed choices. What’s so wrong with that?
I am pleased to be a supporter, not only of the YMCA Youth Parliament, but also of their Bill to see Civics Education be included in school curriculums.
Keep up the great work!
