The Allan Labor Government is helping to keep local sporting fields green all year round and save water through a new stormwater harvesting system in the City of Maroondah.
Minister for Water Harriet Shing officially opened Tarralla Creek Stormwater Harvesting system today – which will save approximately 13 million litres of drinking water for Melbourne per year.
The system will capture stormwater runoff and treat it so that it can be used as irrigation for the Fred Geale Oval, Croydon Oval, Springfield Park and Town Park sports field in Croydon.
The $2.5 million project was made possible through a $1.57 million Labor Government investment and co-funded by Maroondah City Council, Melbourne Water Corporation and Yarra Valley Water.
The Labor Government has also invested $290,000 towards the redevelopment of Town Park sports field, in Croydon.
The stormwater harvesting system for Tarralla Creek complements the Reimagining Tarralla Creek project – led by Melbourne Water – which transformed a 500 metre section of Tarralla Creek, and Croydon Wetlands, into a naturalised green space.
These projects will prevent stormwater runoff from polluting local waterways as well as better manage water resources to ensure sporting fields and green sites can thrive all year round.
This stormwater harvesting projects is one of many Integrated Water Management projects across Victoria that improve the way water is managed, conserve drinking water and deliver more liveable and climate resilient communities.
Since 2017, the Labor Government has co-funded 178 strategic and capital projects totalling more than $72 million in investment to support resilient cities and towns. This has helped to save around 1 billion litres of drinking water each year.
